The project title is a combination of Mofu (‘Modernism for the future’) and the Japanese concept of ‘Wabi Sabi’. The series of prints show a selection of buildings that were constructed during the interwar period that are being classified as ‘Kaunas Modernism’. In our project we deliberately chose not to focus on a romanticized representation of aesthetic elements. Instead we wanted to show a view on how the buildings function in today’s context with all their flaws and merits. With the intention to open up the discussion in which direction the future of Kaunas Modernism should go. Should the aim be picture-perfect restoration? Or should there be tolerance of a certain level of imperfection?
A series detailed drawings with descriptive legends show an alternative view on 3 well-acclaimed modernistic buildings, the house of general Juozas Kraucevičius by architect G. Gumeniukas and the house of doctor J. Žemgulis by architect by architect V. Landsbergis-Žemkalnis and the house of businessman R. Polovinskas by architect A. Funkas.
Additionally a signed series of riso-prints was created in collaboration with Handsonpress that are sold in solidairty with people effected by the war in Ukraine. If you want to acquire a copy, you can reach out to us through our website or social media.
