The plot for this patio house in Wortegem-Petegem is situated in a new residential allotment characterized by a heterogeneous architectural landscape, with various styles standing side by side. The garden adjoins a vast, rolling landscape offering beautiful panoramic views.
However, a high-voltage power line runs across the allotment, with a prominent transmission tower located just a few meters from the plot.
The design of the house responds thoughtfully to this context.
The living area is oriented in all directions and is organized as an open space between enclosed volumes housing the supporting functions (garage, kitchen, bedrooms, and bathrooms), all centered around a central patio. This layout creates four key sightlines and diagonal views, cleverly diverting attention away from the transmission tower.
The materiality of the façade extends into the interior, reinforcing the spatial distinction between the open living areas around the patio and the enclosed spaces, such as the kitchen and bedrooms. Two types of window openings were designed for the enclosed volumes and the intermediary living spaces. In each living area, a window fully spans the space between two closed volumes, offering a framed view of the garden or the expansive landscape beyond. In the enclosed volumes, framed openings were incorporated into the masonry façades.
The garden features an additional low concrete volume, extending above ground level, along with a swimming pond. This volume complements the four enclosed building volumes of the house, harmonizing with the overall design.
