The starting point of the renovation of an apartment of about 200 square meters in a building of the early 1900s of Marigliano, Naples, consists in the stripping of the pre- existence, a rectangular plan of 27x7 meters composed of a succession of six communicating rooms with thick bearing walls in tuff. At the end of the sequence of rooms, a terrace overlooks the bell tower of the Annunziata Church. The placement of the entrance to the house on the opposite side from the terrace has placed at the center the theme of passage and use of space, leading to a reinterpretation of the concept of corridor and separation between the private area and the space for the sociability. The perception of the sequence of passing rooms is emphasized by the introduction of marble portals, as in the historic houses of Campania, which establish a scale relationship with the lowered volumes of the sanitary facilities, positioned as the central spine of the first three rooms and illuminated by skylights. Here the corridor takes on a new shape, expanding and compressing, becoming a portion of the room and no longer a linear connecting element. The first three rooms see the dialogue between the Nero Marquinia marble of the portals, the oak wood of the floor and boiserie, and the natural light coming from the windows and the straight skylight. In the last three rooms the spatial and perceptual relationships change. Here the concept of passage through portals is replaced by a search for continuity between the different areas. Simple openings in the load-bearing masonry allow you to read the space immediately. Here “the room” is composed of the living area, the kitchen, the dining area and the outdoor terrace which, thanks to the large window, becomes a real extension of the house.
