Tower Hanover Freight Station
The renovation of the tower to be used as a hotel completed as the final stage of the revitalisation of Hannover's main freight station.
The clear-cut anthracite-coloured trapezoidal sheet metal façade of the building creates an identity-forming link to the exterior and interior design of the main freight station, which has already been converted into a neighbourhood centre. As the high point of the quarter, the entire area is thus clearly defined and made visible.
Built more than 140 years ago, the main freight station was the development generator of today's Nordstadt, a district of Hanover close to the city centre. After being revitalised by the freight station, which we have already converted into a neighbourhood centre, the site steeped in history is now considered an urban hotspot. As the final element of the ensemble, the nine-storey high-rise building, formerly a dormitory and office for Deutsche Bahn, has now been renovated to make it more energy-efficient.
Together with the outdoor spaces, leisure activities and infrastructure in the entire area of the freight station are effectively linked. With careful consideration of the site conditions, a hybrid programme has been formulated in a clear design language. The entire conversion was implemented within a resource-saving concept for the re-use of derelict industrial heritage, which is particularly reflected in the careful handling of the existing buildings and the connection of the indoor and outdoor facilities.
