AN ISLAND
As part of the Workshop W.A.Ve 2021 of the Iuav University of Venice, which invited to reflect on the theme of the island, the following experience is developed:
An island
Robinson why have you returned from your island?
The island of yourself, rich in your actions
Without laws nor abdication or commitment
Without control of the intruding eye
Nor strange hand that breaks spells
Robinson, how is it that you came back from your island?
(Vicente Huidobro)
An island is an island but some things look like an island.
If people want an island, the architect should make an island.
It’s about making an island
Doing the most with the least
With a material as despised as a bag of rubbish.
Making an island.
1
An island is a surface surrounded by water.
So we have to make water
To make everything into an island.
2
An island is a separate place
So with the same mantle built with rubbish bags
Invent an island now
3
There is a beach of black rocks in the Canary Islands
Then with the same covering built with rubbish bags
They build an island of black rocks
4
There are five plastic islands in the world and nobody wants those islands
So they have to build an island out of the same cloth
That can accommodate the students who are resting
somewhere in the faculty.
Gran Canaria
27°56’04.0″N 15°35’57.2″W
An island in the Canary Islands archipelago, is located in the Atlantic Ocean, between Tenerife to the west and Furteventura to the east. It is located about 250 km from the African coast and over 1100 km from the Iberian coast. With a surface area of approximately 1560 square kilometres, Gran Canaria is the third largest island in the archipelago and the second largest in terms of population.
The island, of volcanic origin and circular in shape, is characterised by high mountains, reaching up to 1956 metres above sea level at Pico de las Nieves.
Gran Canaria also has a generally steep and rocky coastline, with the exception of the eastern region, and there are large calderas, such as Tirajana and Bandama, and numerous thermal springs.
Inhabited in ancient times by the indigenous Guanches, Gran Canaria has been politically dependent on Spain since the 15th century.
The island hosts the city of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, the most important metropolitan area of the entire archipelago and the capital, together with Santa Cruz de Tenerife, of the Canary Islands. In 2005, UNESCO declared 46% of the island a Biosphere Reserve.
