FREIHAM SPORTS PARK
With 25.000 future inhabitants the district of Freiham in western Munich represents the largest urban development project in the city’s recent history. The Sports Park complements the educational campus in the district’s centre and was commissioned as result of an architectural competition in 2014. It holds two 3-pitch sports halls with spectator stands, multi-purpose rooms, a swimming pool, a clubhouse and restaurant as well as various outdoor sports fields.
Situated just off the edge of the city, it defines the joint between urban space and landscape and serves as a public promenade. As such it comprises common spaces that are linked with the urban road and bicycle network and lead to the outdoor grounds and the adjoining landscape. Through a topographical design approach the separate buildings add up to a terraced silhouette.
As the first facility in Munich the Sports Park enables disabled people to partake in team activities for both amateurs sports and clubs alike. It is being used for physical education by the adjacent educational campus comprising four different school types as well as by public sports clubs. The lined up facilities are organised alongside a two-sided system of access, which allows for public entrances facing the street for clubs, spectators and visitors while pupils from the adjacent educational campus are offered a safe access via the outdoor sports grounds.
The overall connection between the various buildings is established through a unisonous materiality: both the façade as well as the outdoor paving are made of a light coloured, slightly charred brick which is reminiscent of the local soils. With help of technical modulations in the masonry the buildings’ volumes are being further accentuated. A compact volume-surface-ratio, the use of sustainable building materials and of alternative energies contribute to a highly sustainable architecture.
