Scenografia di Frammenti
ROBOCOOP’s latest commissioned installation in Rome, ‘Scenografia di Frammenti’ represents an attempt to build a Giovanni Battista Piranesi's architecture of fragments and rests.
Commissioned by the Soprintendenza Speciale di Roma for the 300th birth anniversary of Piranesi to cover a construction site during the restoration of Piazza Dei Cavalieri di Malta, designed by the architect himself in 1765, this ephemeral massive structure has been conceived by multiple layers of key understanding and interpretations.
The design process starts from the Piranesi's stones and decorations on the wall of the square and moved by the anastilosis approach to rebuilding the history through the restoration from the exact found rests. In this way, the artwork aims at creating a sort of unbuilt and on-going scenographia of fragments and unveiling a lapidarium of the architectures by Piranesi.
Conceived as a construction site itself, the giant 1:1 scale artwork mixes multiple architectural textures and materials, sampling some engravings and drawings by Piranesi and using them as a pattern to make the fragmented walls. It also reveals anonymous rural landscapes of the Roman countryside through transparent materials and up-and-down paths.
