ROJA Quad Skate Arena
A new elevated platform to skate on abandoned space below Stadium tribune
Our office has inserted a quad skating arena and community center into an abandoned space below Gelora Bung Karno main stadium in Central Jakarta. The stadium is a part of a sports complex, that was built in 1960 for the 1962 Asian Games and recently underwent major reconstruction for the 2018 Asian Games and Asian Para Games. After the Asian Games have finished this complex become Jakarta’s landmark for all kind sports activity and community.
The main challenge of this project was an existing heritage concrete tribune that divides space into 2 different elevation areas, thus creating a narrow plane that not suitable as a roller-skating setting, that must provide a continuous lane for people skate properly.
Realizing this, our solution is to create a new donut space platform with an independent structure, overlapping the existing tribune, to become a new platform for their skating arena. This circular lane is connected to a gradually down ramp, to let people skate continuously, from different elevation platform. The existing tribune then converted to a seating area, to let people rest or taking a picture in between skating activity.
Sports theme interior decoration and furniture design were utilized in the lobby area as an outfitting theme for the Gelora Bung Karno Sports Complex. To complement the quad skate activities, 80s theme lights and decoration settings were imbued to this space as a memorabilia of a Jakarta quad skate community that active in the late 80s. Reflecting materials were also added into the vertical and horizontal surface such as the semi-circle ceiling, while the shape resembling the skating rink below, the material itself reflects the lights thus creating an intriguing visual effect.
