Hotel Sonne Füssen by OSA
Where Ludwig II preferred to stay to recover from the affairs of state? Very much in the region Königswinkel in the Allgäu and with pleasure also in Füssen. Not far from here are his royal castles Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau Castle. In the heart of Füssen, at Prinzregentenplatz 1, is the 'Hotel Sonne', which OSA Ochs Schmidhuber Architects have rebuilt and extended on behalf of the hotelier family Martin and Beatrice Hanauer.
The work of the architects included the interior renovation of existing buildings from different eras, for which they created a new construction phase with 5th upper floors and an underground car park on an area of 2,300 square meters. This connecting tract now extends along Luitpoldsstraße, linking the existing architecture with the new building. The first floor area of the wing and the new building is completely glazed, creating a brighter space that opens up to the culturally rich surroundings of the hotel. The five upper floors of our new building and the connecting tract are covered on the front side with a red plaster facade with broom finish.
The 'Hotel Sonne' has always been a themed hotel and with many details it reminded us of the most famous of all the kings of Bavaria, Ludwig II, and of his closely acquainted and highly esteemed contemporaries. These included his cousin Empress Elisabeth of Austria, the composer Richard Wagner, his wife Cosima, his cook Theodor Hierneis and his Hoflakai Lorenz Mayr. Through their interior design and creative details, OSA Ochs Schmidhuber Architekten have brought the stories and special features of these people back to life for posterity. Tradition and progress go hand in hand in the 'Hotel Sonne', because despite the journey into the past, into the late 19th century, the hotel with its technical equipment has arrived in the middle of the 21st century.
