Living Milano is getting very difficult for youngsters because of many reasons.
We worked on two of those:

The tendency of traditional housing real estate prices that is growing every day.
The negative impact of air and noise pollution on people daylife. MAMA house was originally an office space, located on a high first floor near to the very city centre, facing two main traffic ways: noisy and extremely polluted they represents an ‘inlet’ for cars and trucks coming from East to the city center. Moreover trams are passing by generating a very strong noise pollution. The housing market of the city lists an office space 1/3 the price of an apartment building in those area. Converting and refurbish is much cheaper then buying an apartment and renovate. The decision to make a house from an office was very delicate and at the same time extremely simple considering two main aspects for the future inhabitants of the space: the quality of the air and the quality of the noise pollution. The translation of our thoughts consists in a series of folding windows device, made by different systems of openings that act as a layer, more precisely a filter that screens the internal spaces of the house from otuside noise and pollution. Always allowing the opening of the pre-exhisting windows, the new device, slightly set back from the original facade, has been worked out in section to host a case for books and objects on the bottom part taking advantage of the depth of the space, and above to include a system of specifically designed plantspots for those kind of plants able to clean the air from pollution. The house consists in a main bedroom, a kids bedroom, already planned to be divided in two smaller indipendent units, two bathrooms and a kitchen that faces a large living where a strange diagonal cut takes place in the straight geometries of the plan defining a veranda, a working space surrounded by green and tall plants, and fresh vegetables. What once was an indoor space suddenly becomes a domestic garden.
