Grand Street Residence
We designed this penthouse residence atop a 110 year old manufacturing building in lower Manhattan, with the objective of creating a villa in the garden. Toward this end, the roof structure and carrier beams of the original building were reinforced to support the increased deadload of the penthouse, soil, and plantings.
The living spaces of the penthouse are linked to the adjacent exterior landscaped spaces, which include decks, a lawn, planting beds, a fish pond and a thriving kitchen garden. There are wonderful views of Midtown to the north, the Financial district to the south and the Police Building dome to the west. One is left with a surreal sensation of being atop a mesa looking out toward distant geological formations.
Goode Green provided landscape design. The roof of the penthouse is planted with native grasses and wildflowers, and is home to a bee colony and chickens, demonstrating the potential of utilizing the urban roofscape.
