Red House
La casa rossa is a single-family house located in the countryside north of Rome. Analogously to the House for the Barrels Manufacturer—designed by Claude-Nicolas Ledoux in 1773–1775 and shaped as a barrel—la casa rossa is designed for a tunnels manufacturer and its long façade is characterized by a series of pillars creating a portico, extended for all the house length. The short facade is very narrow and because of its size, materials and colors it recalls the ancient buildings set in the town’s historic center and suburbs. On closer inspection, the short façade does not belong to the house itself but it describes a small pavilion, used as both an outdoor kitchen and a dressing room. This small construction can be accessed to look at the landscape, an amazing countryside populated by sheep. A pool measures the distance between this small pavilion and the house itself, it connects these two volumes in a unique long rectangle. (text by Lina Malfona)
