Standaertsite
The design proposal retains and restores the 'most beautiful' hangar with fine trusses in the centre of the site. It is a large, slender building on the axis of the site. This shed serves as the beating heart of the site with 4 studios / polyvalent spaces where many community activities can take place. A generous passage through the building connects both sides of the park.
From the shed, visitors have an overview on a large part of the park. The architecture explores the possibilities of boundary conditions between inside and outside. Benches as part of the carpentry, provide a space to meet under the spacious roof. So it can be used as a shelter in the parc, even when the centre is closed. A transparent groundfloor opens up the view. Among other things, it accommodates 'the Inn', the little café run by the neighbourhood. The studios on the upper floor are given a more introverted character.
In addition, a large canopy in the corner of the site accommodates open air activities such as neighbourhood parties, concerts, markets, etc. It is made out of the laminated wooden beams from the demolished sheds. The canopy stretches between the common walls of the site, columnless, so the park runs underneath, unhindered.
The park extends to the streets, bringing the greenery literally to the edges of the pavement, and disrupting the continuous row of facades. Artworks by Marc Nagtzaam adorn the guard walls like steel linedrawings, an invitation for climbing plants.
