Public Schools
The Earthquake that stroke the central region of Mexico on September 19 2017 was one of the worst disasters in the last 30 years. Many cities and towns were seriously damaged. Only in the state of Puebla more than 200 Public schools were damaged, most of them rural schools. Few months after the disaster we were contacted by a group of private investors who wanted to donate 2 rural schools in the Municipality of Santa Isabel Cholula in Puebla, were 2 Elementary schools were destroyed. The challenge was to be able to design and build both schools in less than 9 months. For this project the idea was to design a Module that could adapt to different conditions within the regional context of Santa Isabel Cholula. The urgency of this projects, led us to generate a modular system of prefabricated elements that could be easily assembled and be flexible enough to generate different dispositions according to the specific site and program of the school. The industrial essence of the materials combined with the typical use of semi open circulations and the vernacular barn typology, gives the schools a unique prescence on the context. The composition of both schools was done by a common module of porticos and classroom units. Both of these modules could grow in different ways to generate the whole complex and define the open spaces of the schools, generating a sequence of patios and enclosed spaces.
