Wohnsiedlung Riedgraben
The property of the Baugenossenschaft Frohheim is located in Schwamendingen, which was partly built according to the plans of the former city master planner Heinrich Steiner. The parcel is occupied by an independent figure: a large form, which - divided by protusions and setbacks - appears in the majority of three-storey and reacts to the small-scale neighborhood. Two terraced houses and one
settlement house complete the existing one-family house row along the Tramstrasse. The necessary upstairs retypologies enable a generous, intensively planted communal outdoor space. One sequence of two inside a balcony and a small central light house is a quality of the apartment type technologies.
In the "belly" of the apartments, the kitchen, the over the patio is naturally exposed. The dining room is in a narrow balcony in a south to the yard. All living spaces are located on the south façade and benefit from generous, partially covered loggias. In order to avoid "residential hygiene collisions", one
room is arranged at a time. The maisonettes are accessed via a two-storey entrance room with kitchen. This opens itself, similar to a studio, over large window to north. The living rooms with roof terraces are located in the attic floor. The light penetrates through the patios into the open "entrance passageways" on the ground floor. In combination with the balconies above it creates a horizontal and vertical perforation of the building volume. As a tree-like shape, the exposed concrete structure grows out of the base. This creates a seam that holds the building parts together. The parapets are formed by filigree profiles. This overlagern to the knotty concrete structure and create a plastically shaped building envelope.
