Small House
Part new build, part refurbishment of a Grade II Listed flower shop in north London, the Small House is a pre-fabricated prototype for compact living. With only 14 m2 across various levels, the house is small, yet surprisingly spacious.
The original facade has been restored, while the rear has been demolished and excavated to allow for the new building to fit neatly in the 12 m2 infill space between two end of terrace houses. The house was transported to site, craned into position and installed over the course of one day.
Given the compact nature of the space, a rich, tactile materiality was essential. Marble, cherry wood, leather and felt surfaces define different areas of the house.
Three levels differentiate kitchen, living and bedroom. Much like in a boat, built-in furniture can be re-assembled to perform several functions, turning this tiny space into a habitable, fully functional house
