Itamonte Garage
Situated in the alto do Cosme Velho (Rio de Janeiro), the Itamonte Garage project was guided by the flexibility of the program and space.
Measuring an area of 70 m2, it was initially utilized as a large deposit with simply one large room, a small bathroom and a garage with sparse lighting and ventilation. With a craft brewery as the end goal, the space was transformed into a grand room with an open-concept kitchen, suite, washroom, and service area. The current space can be modified in the years to come to serve a different purpose – as, for example, a rental apartment or even return to its original usage as a garage.
In order to reduce the cost and meet the desired deadline, the renovation was administered by the architectural firm and started while the executive project was still being developed.
This dynamic supported a direct dialogue amongst the team, creating substantial changes throughout the process – such as the opening of fenestrations for light to enter the space, the discovery of materials that were covered by old double walls, and tests of colors and materials. The renovation of
Itamonte Garage, therefore, was characterized by a constant redesign that was able to emphasize details of the pre-existing space.
