Beach Cinema
A new way to experience an outdoor beach cinema, rethinking the current configuration of the typology through an efficient design in this specific seaside environment.
The starting point was the creation of a new way to experience an outdoor beach cinema, rethinking the current configuration of the typology through an efficient design in this specific seaside environment. To conceptualize the primary ideas, three basic elements of the traditional movie theatre are identified [I] – the pyramid of light generated by the projector, the 16:9 proportioned screen and the audience area – and rearranged to answer effectively to the programmatic need of a 25 seater surface, resulting in a single structure that shelters a well-defined perimeter. In addition, it is a priority to take advantage of the usage of the beach, where people lay down on the sand, which naturally suggests the projection to be 90º rotated, towards a horizontally placed screen, allowing the audience to watch a movie effortlessly laying down [II].
This rotation results in a pyramid topped by the technical area, where the projection and sound are generated. Moreover, the vertical-proportioned scheme originates a visible from afar object, which results in a meeting and reference point for the nearby users - hence the 8 meters height shelter-like form [III].
In order to provide shadow for the ideal projection conditions, the pyramid is covered with canvas reminding sails of a ship [IV]. The maritime theme is also present in the big-proportioned wooden ship-like structures, whose elements function as both entrances to the outdoor movie projection area [V]. Ultimately, a portal between the land and the sea is created, welcoming people and providing a new beach cinema experience surrounded by the natural elements.
