Museo del Tesoro di San Lorenzo
The Museum of the Treasure of the Cathedral of San Lorenzo is the museum located in the underground rooms of the Cathedral of San Lorenzo, in the historic center of Genoa.
Set up on a project by the architect Franco Albini (1952-56), the museum is recognized as an international masterpiece of modern museology.
The underground rooms in grey stone, immersed in dim light, recall the tholos buildings of the Mycenaean world.
The architectural structure of the museum is divided into short corridors that lead to a small atrium on which a first circular space opens; then a central room, irregular in shape, on which are inserted three more circular rooms, of ever-larger size. Blocks of black stone of the promontory are used in the floors and walls, while the brick and concrete are the roofs of the various rooms.
