Level Up
// Level Up // An outdoor multi functional event space and elevated pavilion which was handcrafted with love by 28 creators from 22 countries over 15 days at the 2018 European Assembly of Student Architects and in association with Rijeka 2020.
Level Up in its process & built form is a site-specific design & build workshop aiming to readapt the disused rooftop of the Export Drvo buildings extension located next to the Dead Canal in Rijeka's Delta area, bringing it to life as a meeting place for locals. The pavilion starts at the street, with multiple levels reaching the elevated terrace built on top of the extension. You can walk up, climb, jump or hop, sit or sleep, meet & greet, host a group on Level Up. A raised platform on the terrace provides for small gatherings to be addressed and a observation level steps up to allow users to gaze at the city beyond.
Level Up is to become a social/Event space outside the Export Drvo, which is set to become an important venue when Rijeka becomes Europe’s culture capital 2020. The pavilion provides a beautiful view of the canal, the ‘Galeb Ship’, and Rijeka’s beautiful post industrial Harbour.
The great significance of public places in the urban environment is well known, as is their lacking in the center of city Rijeka, which is especially pronounced in the Delta zone. Instead of creating new public urban area, this workshop puts focus on reclaiming existing space and creates a balcony to the Delta with an industrial aesthetic which will act as a public frontage
In an era where permanence of the built form has been defining what architects do, Level Up aims to celebrate Ephemeral Urbanism, which invites us to ponder material & spatial impermanence. Is a recognition of the transitory nature of physical substances integral to the city growth process? Level Up is not just a construction idea but a pursuit of this philosophy
