LA SERENISIMA
The Unfolding Pavilion is an exhibition and editorial project that takes place in Venice in occasion of the Venice Architecture Biennale. In its 2018 edition, the Unfolding Pavilion exhibition took place inside the Gino Valle’s Giudecca Social Housing, through the Little Italy project, where a group of Italian architects born in the 1980s were asked to present a contribution. La Serenissima is our research and realization project presented for this occasion.
The Serenissima project aims at broadening the studio’s general approach to space by incorporating the third dimension into the design of a horizontal surface. References, generally used to develop 2d drawings, are shaped into 3d elements that, through reflection, generate a drawing on the ground.
By playing with the particular set of elements Venice has to offer: concrete becomes water, decoration is used as structure and color articulates space. The typical venetian glass flowers are merged with the architectural element of vaults recreating a system of interconnected sottoportegos, their reflection, generating the multitude of sensorial experience.
The installation consists in a series of architectural devices placed on a mirrored surface to be positioned on a table or on a pedistal. The surface is composed of a regular 5x5 grid of 25 squared mirrors and has a global dimension of 60x60 centimeters. The architectural devices are 3d printed, their inner surfaces are hand painted with colours of the venetian glass tradition.
