Newish House
Newish House is a complete renovation and refurbishment of a private house at Lidingö island, in Stockholm. The house is located in an area with predominantly private houses and large generous gardens for play and family activities. It is characterised by a hip roof, marking the extent of the original house from 1920th and a modern extension from the -60th. Making a total area of approximately 270m2 over two floors and additional guest house and garage.
The client wanted to unify a fragmented exterior and create a contemporary interior space, better connected to the garden.Off white plaster is used for the new facade and different grain sizes create an edge definition of the original house, emphasising the house´s different styles and layers of changes over time.
An east/west axis is created through the kitchen, allowing flexible and seamless use of indoor and outdoor space over time. From early breakfast in the first rays of morning light to evening bbq in the garden. Possibilities for cooking and dining as a social activity acts along this long-stretched space.
Previous cellular room structure on the ground floor is transformed into open spaces. Only rows of columns remain of solid load bearing walls. The new spaces are visually and physically open to each other. The column and beam structure keep the experience of separation, by framing spaces and furnishing rather than disconnecting them.
Axo
A vertical cut through the entrance hall, makes a double height space, connecting the two floors. Generating a new flow of light, sound and views between the upper private rooms and the social ground floor.
