Saint Bernards kennel
Reconstruction of the hospice kennel at the Great Saint Bernard Pass
At 2,500 metres above sea level, surrounded by imposing mountains, near the everlasting snow, amidst a rude landscape, the project offers summer quarters for Saint Bernards, the region’s iconic dog.
The existing run-down kennels needed to be rebuilt completely to meet the current sanitary standards, as well as to welcome visitors in a more suitable and attractive context.
Each of the three boxes is composed of two similar and mirrored modules. The structure is covered with stabilized processed steel, blending with the surrounding landscape.
The two big gates, when opened, define – with the barbed-wire fences – a generous « courtyard » for the dogs to bask and walk around, while the box offers shelter and a refuge out of sight of visitors.
Situated in avalanche terrain, the installation can be completely dismounted for storage during winter times.
