The 1970s bungalow is located in a typical Flemish allotment, surrounded by trees and greenery. The client’s request was straightforward: to extend the roof level by adding two extra children's bedrooms. Early in the design process, we decided to treat the roof level as a completely new floor, with a new structure and layout, retaining only the position of the staircase. By raising the roof, we created just enough space for the extension. This addition was constructed using a light timber frame, with the exterior finished in brickwork and a tiled roof featuring sharply defined eaves.
The house backs onto the castle park in Mariakerke. On the first floor, one can look into the treetops of the park, a quality we emphasized in the design. The floor plan features a spacious central area providing access to the various bedrooms and bathroom. This space is brightly lit by a window on the front façade and a sliding door at the rear, opening onto the terrace. This creates a pleasant and multipurpose living space in the hallway beneath the wooden roof.
The extension was intentionally designed to be clearly visible in the façade. We selected a new concrete brick with a distinct size, color, and texture that contrasts with yet complements the existing brickwork. The original roof slope remains visible, with former openings bricked up and new openings created between the old and the new structure.
