Twin Twin
The city demands, more and more, non programmed spaces that satisfy the needs of their inhabitants. Contingent and affective containers able to foster social and work relationships. A freelance photographer wants to participate in this idea of open and flexible spaces by hosting activities such as photo studio, co-working, venue for different events, showroom, workshop… A place that has the capacity to contain simultaneous programs.
A really tight budget determines the location at the city periphery. An affordable spot appears at a
lower ground floor with limited natural light. It is located on an alleyway surrounded by social housing buildings from the 60´s, with a degraded and low quality status.
In order to favor social and work connections, a contingent and affective space is proposed
through a series of design principles: space optimization, shared facilities and work with the alleyway to turn it into an active frontage. In order to allow simultaneous activities and future events, the venue is split into two twin spaces by using a central element that provides services to both subareas. This strategy enables the optimization of the available surface, as heating, air conditioning, bathrooms, kitchens and storage space is shared by both areas.
The facade is proposed as an intermediate space. The existing brick wall is substituted by an in-between veil from exterior and interior conditions. A green filter, a shelter layer anda container of possibilities are the tools used to transform the alleyway and the interior into a more desirable space.
