De Muur
Because of the large scale developments along the highway A9 and the Burgemeester Rijnderslaan the historical character of the Ouderkerkerlaan is under pressure. The Ouderkerkerlaan is characterised by its peatland origin (‘veen’). The green strip between the huge KPMG office building and the houses along the Ouderkerkerlaan has a width of only 30 meters and a length of 650 meters. Next to protecting the houses agains traffic noise and protecting the historical character of the Ouderkerkerlaan, the quality of the park strip was the be improved.
To emphasize the proportions of the area, the wall is composed of horizontal bands made up of rolling layers of bricks with the same colour but with different thickness. In the wall incisions are made to give him a plastic quality. The approximately 2.40 meters high sections have a top edge that is clearly visible both during the day and at night. During the day, a continuous strip of glass slides let through a tingling light, while this glass is illuminated from the inside at night. The crowning is formed by white glazed ceramic elements that scatter the sunlight. At strategic points, small ornaments made of glass and stainless steel provide enrichment of the image. Glass surfaces, trees and continuous locks strengthen the relationship between the two sides of the wall. At the location of the connection to the KPMG building, the wall slides into a thick green yew fence of 1.80 meters high.
