The pavillon called "Iuav glass house" was conceived in occasion of the Iuav Open Day 2018. It was realized as result of a competition for ideas for a pavillon in FRP the Iuav opened to the Iuav students of architecture. The chosen project was Lightmotiv by the students Davide Del Sante and Damiano Mazzocchini.
In the garden of the Tolentini, the historic head office of the Iuav University of Venice, a very special temporary pavilion was built for the Open Day 2018. This is an innovative prototype of glass house.
Its peculiarity is that while the most famous buildings of this type, from the Glass House of Mies van der Rohe, to that of Philip Johnson, to the Casa de Vidro by Lina Bo Bardi, were the result of the use of at least two materials, the steel for horizontal structures and systems and glass for curtain walls, in this case glass derivatives are the only materials used.
Iuav has in fact created, with the design aid of students and architectural professors, a product that enhances the aesthetic and structural potential of FRP (fiber reinforced polymer) profiles made of glass fiber obtained by pultrusion (a process of production of fibers for traction ), whose editing was entrusted to the Engie company. The material, resistant to stresses as much as steel, but incredibly lighter and more durable, re-interprets its ancient origin through treatments that are now possible thanks to technological innovation that allows it to restore solidity to a fragile material.
Every part of this pavilion derives from the glass: from the structure, to the infills, to the roof; its architecture looks to the future from the utopias of the past.
Built to host the Open Day meetings, designed by two students of the Master's Degree in Architecture, winners of a competition announced for the occasion by the University, the building does not only show the skills of Iuav students and teachers, but also the possibilities that the material offers, for example, in the field of emergency structures, marine constructions, housing.
