Perfettamente Imperfetto
Milano Design Week 2018
During this year’s Milan Design Week, Emiliano Salci and Britt Moran present three wellarticulated representations of their latest projects in different locations in Milan’s Brera district.
DIMOREGALLERY on the 2nd floor of Via Solferino,11 (staircase on the right) showcases “Transfer”, an emotive installation dedicated to Masters of 20th century design; an exhibition that further cements DIMOREGALLERY’s position as Milan’s principal institution dedicated to historical and contemporary design.
The exhibit unfolds as a journey through spacious rooms which transform themselves into different mises en scène, becoming rooms within rooms, and various settings of distinct shapes and styles crafted in fabrics. For the visitor, the spaces symbolically represent different environments, ways to live, idealized worlds and day to day life that are reflected in the memory of the pieces which communicate and connect between themselves. Furniture and pieces that resemble cherished jewels, protected in treasure chests by curtains made in de Le Cuona fabric. In fact, the title of the exhibit “Transfer” suggests the idea of a journey across distinct cultural ambiences and unusual aesthetic settings that come together thanks to a common creative idealogy. For example, the two connecting rooms, filled with 20th century pieces, resemble the cultivated archives of a collector, which form the unmistakable expression of the creative duo, Salci and Moran. Among the pieces on display are works by Carlo Mollino, Angelo Lelli, Giò Ponti, Carlo Scarpa, Alvar Aalto, Charlotte Perriand and Jean Royère.
The exhibition continues at its second location at Via Solferino, 11 on the 2nd floor of the opposite staircase on the left. This site showcases the decidedly conceptual yet essential display by DIMORESTUDIO in “Perfettamente Imperfetto” (“Perfectly Imperfect”), where signature pieces from the Studio’s “Progetto Non Finito” and “Oggetti” collections are on display. The distinctive furniture and decorative pieces are further expressions of the fresh, unique approach of the latest collections by DIMORESTUDIO. The artistic installation pays tribute to the purity of the firm’s creations through the use of neutral colors that, through their simplicity, showcase the precious materials, luxurious quality and well-defined character of the DIMORESTUDIO collections. Unveiling the latest pieces from the “Progetto Non Finito” collection in a neutral setting highlights the sheer beauty and variety of materials used and the complexity of the workmanship involved in creating the discernible pieces. On display is an assortment of furniture and objéts inspired by the Milanese and Roman “salons” of the 60s and 70s; a look which was defined by an emerging modernism and distinguished by the especially florid moment in Italian design and aesthetics.
At the center of the installation, the following unique pieces have been placed - a table, four lamps, an armchair and a screen; with their setting acting as a sort of incubator. There is one piece per room, which transforms them into the leading characters of a dramatic play where everything rotates around their exceptional monologues. Each piece displays the firm’s rigorous quest for sophisticated materials and the unique juxtapositions created in the execution of their design process; combinations like bamboo and Viennese woven cane with bronze, polished brass and wood, as well as dark and intense colors that give birth to a unique artistic expression characterized by stylistic fusions and even odes to the world of fashion.
The 3rd destination is up the street at Via Solferino, 22. For the first time DIMORESTUDIO steps out and reveals itself in a visionary installation in six street facing windows. Open until the end of May, the temporary showroom presents LIMITED EDITION, the new collection of nine one-ofa-kind pieces created by Emiliano Salci for DIMORESTUDIO. For this collection, the designer resurrected classic pieces from the end of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th century and transformed them with his unique vision into contemporary and alluring creations. They are deconstructed pieces, taken apart and put back together again, revived with new fittings and bright new lacquers, in a variety of materials like brass and polished steel that breathe new life into them with an irreverent charisma. An arrangement of consoles, bars, low tables and buffets are set up in a colorful environment which serves as a vibrant backdrop with its bright purple carpeting and pink walls.
