Palazzo C.D.
A contemporary interior design project located in an old historical Italian building.
This ground floor apartment is situated in a 16th-century landmark building, which has been mindfully renovated and restored, preserving the architectural integrity of the structure and the historical frescoes on the wall surfaces. Access to and views of the palazzo’s impressive common areas set the tone for this 80 square meter living space.
Entering through the palazzo’s large, enclosed atrium, the modern living quarters contrast and complement the historic building. The first floor includes the master bedroom, bathroom, living room, dining room and kitchen, all finished to an extremely high standard with custom millwork throughout. The living and dining room boast extraordinarily high ceilings and overlook the garden. The new terrazzo flooring is in keeping with the original floors of the house.
The original stone staircase remains intact, leading to the mezzanine level and continuing on to the main floor above. To provide access to the mezzanine level, we custom-designed a steel platform, suspended above the old staircase. Custom-built furniture on the mezzanine level includes a built-in, L-shaped sleeping platform that can accommodate two single beds.
The top of the staircase opens onto the upper main floor, or piano nobile, which has been preserved in its original splendour. 16th-century frescoes depicting colourful Roman scenes line the walls, and the extremely high ceilings lend an air of classical grandeur.
