Penfolds Magill Estate
Penfolds Magill Estate, original home of Penfolds wines and Australia’s most prized wine, Grange, has been redeveloped to position the facility as an internationally recognised tourist destination for South Australia.
The upgrade complements the historic and celebrated vineyard set within five hectares of premium shiraz wines and provides a range of opportunities and experiences, promoting repeat visitation. A pedestrian pathway, creates a sequence of memorable vistas, starting at the front entry and continuing up the drive to the winery, connecting and highlighting the importance of the heritage-listed Grange Cottage.
The Cellar Door has been relocated to the central heart of the site, with the contemporary new building, the Magill Estate Kitchen designed to complement the existing Magill Estate Restaurant, providing modern bookends to focus the visitor’s view.
The new space caters for large groups and busy periods on weekends, while still feeling intimate for smaller numbers during quiet times.
Some 100 varieties of wine are on display in blackened metal art screens showcasing the distinctive red caps associated with the Penfolds brand.
A variety of tasting rooms have been enclosed in the historic stone walls of the oldest cellars on the site, creating a layering effect of history and depth of experience. For example, the Grange Room references a secure bank vault holding precious wine while the Bin Room references the old bins where wine was stored.
The winery’s old cellars have been reconfigured and restored including the old drive and tunnels.
The updated St Henri Cellar and the Helen Keller Vat, form an axis to the historic Penfolds drives, and like the various tasting rooms, they provide a unique Penfolds experience for special visitors.
The Cellar Door links to a modern cafe, the Magill Estate Kitchen, increasing Cellar Door dwell time and encouraging Cellar Door purchases. Visitors have the opportunity to relax and enjoy the view with a glass of wine either indoors or on the grand veranda, which overlooks the vineyard and the Grange Cottage.
