Service centre for the elderly ‘de Muze’
Muizen, on the outskirts of Mechelen, is situated between the railway Mechelen-Brussels and the river Dijle. A strategical location for a new home for the elderly, on a former factory site. Its location on the outskirts of the village is characteristic for the site, an outlying area, in the middle of a building block, viewing the lowland pastures of the Dijle-valley. By planting trees, the factory site is turned into a park. The new centre for the elderly is implanted in the middle of this new park. Two large patios, result of cuttings in the building volume and green roofs, mingle building and nature. The architectural concept is based on colours, sphere and materiality. The organisation of clusters around mutual spaces is based on the principal of sensorial perception of elderly people.
