Bear Market Blackrock Courtyard
Our objective was to integrate the existing café with the new extension whereby the old and new fused seamlessly into one new entity.
The challenge here was to connect the existing basement level outdoor space to the ground floor cafe.
In order to achieve this, we needed to elevate a timber decking at ground floor level and reconfigure the existing café to create a level and visual connection between the café and outdoor space.
The external layout is organised around two large central tables mirroring the inside and these tables support the overhead canopy and provide stability to the structure.
The materials chosen reflect the interior where reinforcement bars fill the space with vertical lines and timber furniture sit horizontally between them.
The timber used externally was charred and sealed to protect against the elements. Planters were integrated around the perimeter.
It is at this boundary between nature and architecture where the most interesting moments occur.
