DEOKSURI HOUSE
The vacation/weekend home to be shared by several family members and friends
Located in Jeju Island, this vacation/weekend house is situated right on the outskirts of a quaint village well known for their tangerine farming and products. The territory has extensive pastoral views and a breathtaking sight of Sambang Mountain against the flat horizon. The narrow shape and size of the original site influenced the longitudinal disposition of the buildings.
The use of concrete drain conduits helped to minimize construction time as the factory manufactured drain conduits were loaded into trailers and assembled on site with a crane. Ten concrete draining conduits measuring 3m in width, 2m in length, and 2.5m in height were used to make six boxes. Each was specifically designed to fit into the kitchen, living room, two bedrooms, and the two bathrooms.
All of the separated rooms are connected via an external wooden deck that rises 0.8m above the road level. This communal deck area is visually hidden from the road by a wooden wall, so as to protect the privacy of inhabitants. Keeping in mind that the vacation/weekend home is a place to be shared by several family members and friends, the design includes exclusive rooms and spaces for each group while still maintaining some shared community areas. The inner courtyard overlooking Sambang Mountain was left alone so as to preserve its natural state. During the summers, one can enjoy the wild grass from the courtyard swaying against the windows.
