URBAN PARK IN JAPIGIA - BARI
The intervention consists in the realization of an urban park in which the football pitch will be relocated. It is a public park, financed by private construction contractors who have carried out the urban redevelopment of the area.
The intervention consists in the realization of an urban park in which the football pitch will be relocated. It is a public park, financed by private construction contractors who have carried out the urban redevelopment of the area.
The design concept begins from the awareness of the two main characteristics of the area: its function as an “interchange” for pedestrian flows and the sense of an “oasis” in a high-density residential area. We decided to emphasize these two aspects, designing a park that respects the pedestrian crossing axes and that is characterized by a large percentage of permeable planted space.
The park as an interchange - The park does not present a break in the urban fabric, but a connection between its main connecting axes. The project includes a central boulevard along which pedestrian pathways flow, flanked by areas for resting. A system of secondary perimeter pathways develops from the main artery for slower flows which includes new areas for leisure, sports and relaxation. This structure allows for reconciling the different rhythms of users with the various intensities of use that characterize the public space. The system of pathways and functions emulates plant morphology: there is a trunk (fast pathway) with its branches (slow pathways) which terminate in leaves (activity spaces).
The park as an oasis - Before the intervention, the only arboreal elements were located in private courtyards surrounding the area. The perimeter green belt has been increased, through the planting of an urban forest along the perimeter of the park. The urban forest is characterized by indigenous species: the spontaneous vegetation will in time constitute a green mantle that will increase the renaturalization and biodiversity of the site.
The park includes sports facilities (a football pitch), games (two play areas for children), two lawn areas for relaxation, a covered pavilion and numerous rest areas.
