Riversdale Road
The architect re-organised, extended and included an unused enclosed exterior courtyard to optimise the rear ground floor of this Victorian terraced house in Highbury, North London for a family with two children. The previous cellular layout was rearranged in order to provide kitchen, dining and a place to socialise and sit, next to a new gas fired stove while overlooking the garden. The rear wall is articulated using a sliding door and a recessed single leaf door. The residents access a sunken patio area before climbing into the garden beyond. The dining area is differentiated from the kitchen area by introducing a white slurried brick wall behind the douglas fir bench seating and exposed joists overhead. A polished concrete floor unifies the space. A large roof light located deep into the plan over the kitchen island helps to naturally illuminate the space.
