CULFORD ROAD
The owners of a cramped and boxy Georgian terraced house wanted it remodelled to create a light and spacious contemporary home where they could entertain friends and family. Existing extensions at the back of the property were demolished and replaced by a striking rear extension across the ground and first floors.
The rear extension is designed as two stacked black boxes to provide a strong visual contrast against the rich mix of London Stock brick walls of the original property. Large floor-to-ceiling windows were installed to allow plenty of natural light and views to the garden.
The ground floor living spaces are zoned into four distinct areas, for cooking, dining, formal and informal seating, through changes in light and the use of different materials. The main family space, complete with fireplace opens to the garden, and the kitchen sits below the roof light above. Warm timber and joinery have been used to subtly separate the dining and living areas, whilst concealing the staircase, storage and utility areas.
On the upper floors, the existing staircase was replaced with a new folded timber panelled stair and the bathrooms and bedrooms were remodelled in keeping with the simple and subtle palette of materials.
Refurbishment of the upper floors included replacement a new folded timber panelled stair, whilst bathrooms and bedroom spaces were remodelled in keeping with the simple and subtle palette of materials.
