T1 - residential house
The new residential building is located in a residual site between the urban fabric, characterized by large buildings, and the agricultural area, characterized by terraced slopes and small residential buildings. The lot was an amorphous embankment without any urban or agricultural connotation and the realization of the project depended on the redevelopment of it. It was necessary to reorganize the area and to create a filter zone between the urban fabric and the agrarian landscape. The terracing of the area and the introduction of a small size building represent an ideal continuity with the neighbouring rural area and mediate the transition from the urban area improving the impact on the surrounding landscape. The new building is shaped together with the ground. Part of the building develops underground and it is conceived to preserve visual continuity with the terraces and to be only partially perceived. The volume above the ground is composed of elementary parallelepipeds which are identified by small variations in height and different finishes of the wall surfaces. The use of local stone parts emphasizes the central double-height body that seems to be embedded in the terrace, such as in many rural architectures of the local iconography where often small farm buildings are partially embedded in the supporting walls of narrow terraces to free up space in front of them. The building contains 5 residential units, but the small dimensions, minimal shapes, compact typology integrated in the terrace and partially underground development, limit its impact on the ground, making it able to dialogue with the heterogeneous urban fabric as well as with the surrounding landscape and transforming the area into a transition zone between town and country.
