Six new openings in the bearing walls modify the layout of the house in order to allow more natural light into the rooms and improve the quality of the spaces. The new visual axes intensify the relationship between the rooms through the diaphragms which frame and dignify each of the house’s daily scenes. The refurbishment acknowledges the elements of the former layout, integrating and recognizing their value; the discarded doorways gain value as new furniture pieces.
Rooms are arranged in order to bring natural light into the most interior spaces and enhance their spatial quality. The new visual axes which have been generated eliminate the hierarchical relationship between rooms – now, more open and permeable – intensifying, at the same time, the sense of continuity throughout the new diaphragms. In this way, each one of the house’s scenes is framed and dignified.
The areas occupied by these activities are dealt with in a singular manner, introducing new elements which enhance and give value to their use. The dining-room area is thus defined by a flooring based on a marble mosaic and a background of thin columns and curtains which act as a filter when viewed from the entrance. A rational kitchen design opens onto the outside through a small balcony. The living room occupies the space in front of the crystal bay window and enjoys the chimney as a visual landmark.
The refurbishment aims to add to the already existing design by acknowledging the elements which shaped the former layout; it does not deny or remove them, but rather adopts them and reuses the existing elements, integrating them into the new layout, recognizing their value. In this way, the discarded doorways – reclassified as new furniture pieces – adopt the role of shelves, bookcases and cupboards for cleaning products; and door leaves become windows or shutters.
