Apartment renovation in a 1960s building designed by Abraham Shapira and Raquel Eskenazi in Providencia
The assignment consisted of finding an apartment to buy and then renovate, it should be well located in the central borough of Providencia, have architectural attributes such as wooden floors, floor to ceiling highs bigger than that required by the current regulations, good light, views and have the potential for a reform that would allow wide, comfortable, open and informal reception spaces, suitable for an intense social life of a young single professional.
The search ended with an apartment in a well-connected neighbourhood in Providencia, in a 1967 building designed by Schapira Ezkenazi, which met the client´s brief. With three orientations, views towards treetops and in a retracted position from the street, the apartment offered a pleasant, luminous and silent atmosphere.
The distribution was arranged from a hall, which organized the three well-defined areas of the original program: public, private and service areas.
The reform mainly intervenes in the public and service areas, which were narrow and strangled each other. The service area composed of kitchen, laundry space and a small study (former maid´s bedroom) are removed, which provides a large open space for living-dining-kitchen, achieving the necessary amplitude to comfortably arrange living and dining room furniture, the kitchen will be integrated and moved to the back of the room, leaving a small laundry space and storage space inside built-in closets. In the rest of the apartment, walls, ceilings, pavements, electrical installations, lighting and windows are renovated. The bathrooms are redesigned and rebuilt.
