Transformation of a late XXth public library into a modern multimedia library
Rework of a conceptual library from the early '90s that was not fullfiling its original purpose and had seen major decrease in its frequentation. Bringing light, open spaces and intimacy as well as light and temperatures control.
The original won competition was a complete rework of an existing concrete built contemporary design that was initially offering a total rework of the southwest facade by adding a gallery providing shade and allowing for a main façade with total transparency, in opposition with the mirror glazed original project that was outdated and did not invite users into the building.
Due to french artistic rights, the original conceptor refused heavy modifications of his projects, and the project only could work on partial facade change, leaving only freedom for interior changes. This however did not prevent reaching the goal of liberating the transparency and the overall major design change of the library.
The project is a success for the annual subscription rate to the library has increased x6 and many students and teenager gather into the building for homework and studying, thank to the welcoming and studious mood of the renovated building.
