Gateways
Gateways was on show in Granary Square, King's Cross, as part of Design Junction, London Design Festival, from the 20th-27th September 2017.
Repositioning ceramics from a small-scale decorative material to one which creates a large surface structure, Gateways creates an immersive public installation consisting of four ceramic gates that reference the history of architecture, from London’s tiled Underground stations to the classical ceramics of Ottoman architecture, all in a bold contemporary language.
The structure of Gateways takes inspiration from one of London’s most popular open spaces on King’s Cross’ Granary Square and draws people to wander through and experience the various views at the centre of the enfilade perspective.
The ceramic tiles used to clad the four gateways have been produced by manufacturers in Turkey which all have a deep history in craftsmanship and innovation.
“No other architectural material has remained as fresh, relevant and cool as ceramics has from a thousand years BC, right through into the 21st Century” Adam Nathaniel Furman
