Vernacular house renovation in Sifnos Island Cyclades Greece
Vernacular house renovation in Sifnos Island Cyclades Greece.
The plot is located on the south hill-side of the Apollonia village in Sifnos island.
Elevated from the pedestrian alleys with a stone wall, the L-shape house is situated on the NW corner, providing a panoramic unobstructed view of both the main settlement and the Aegean sea on the east. Three verandas connect the entrance hall, living room and kitchen with the vineyard garden and enjoy shade at different times of the day. The overall aim of the renovation was to create a hospitable and functional space for families visiting the island without altering the building’s vernacular character. The 67 sq.m. single-storey house was refurbished to include one bedroom, one space for living room and dinning, an entrance hallway, a kitchen and a bathroom. Walls were restored and repainted internally and externally, adding new electromechanical systems. Window frames and shutters were either replaced or reconditioned, in keeping with the style of the settlement. The landscaping was kept to the minimum with old fragments like the water well and an exterior storage in place, while the vineyard takes up the rest of the plot on the SE side. The prevalent white-wash painting, the interior wall alcoves, the timber ceiling beams, the turquoise window color, and the furnishing were chosen to accord with the minimalist Aegean style, while providing the necessary amenities for visitors. The house was renovated by the owner Katerina Komi.
