THEKRANE
The Danish architecture firm Arcgency has carved a luxury two-person retreat inside an industrial coal crane in the harbour neighborhood of Nordhavn in Copenhagen.
Spearheaded by visionary owner Klaus Kastbjerg and architect Mads Møller, The Krane is composed by two areas that can be rented separately: the ground floor hosts a reception area whereas the first floor has been turned into a glass-walled meeting room. A spa with terrace can be found on the second floor, and the top floor features a hotel suite for two, with terrace and lounge.
The choice of black as the leading color for the exclusive Danish design interiors was an homage to its past as a coal crane.
Moreover, black also helps to minimise visual distraction so that people can feel almost enveloped in the interior.
"There are hundreds of different shades of black," said lead architect Mads Møller of Arcgency "Depending on the time of day, you can see so many subtle nuances."
Materiality played a central role in the custom-made design of the interiors: leather, wood, stone and steel are just some of the noble materials used for the furniture, designs and décor details.
All the pieces, handcrafted by Danish artisans, are constructed to disappear - with beds, seating and cupboards integrated into wall panels and the functional pieces hidden away. The result is an extra element of discovery, where objects become like sculptures in a still life.
