Dario Passi. Disegni
"Dario Passi's work interests me, but there’s more to it than that. I also like it. It is an approach to architecture through the territories of drawing and painting, an architecture that prefers the potentiality of an impalpable vision to the brutal reality of an engineering that has no reason to exist except money."
Achille Bonito Oliva
The exhibition is extended until July 28, 2017.
Organized by DIVISARE in collaboration with Fondazione Pastificio Cerere and curated by Alexandra Andresen, the exhibition will be opened to visitors at Fondazione Pastificio Cerere from June 21st to July 21th, 2017.
The exhibition is dedicated to the artistic production of the Italian architect Dario Passi. Following his exhibitions at the Centre Pompidou, Paris 2012 and Frac Centre-Val de Loire, 2015, Passi returns to exhibit his work in Rome with a collection of unpublished drawings, testimony to the research he carried out in the Italian capital in the late 1970s and early 1980s.
With particular attention to the Roman scene, the 20th century architecture and its relationship with the world of painting are the themes of the research with which Dario Passi intends to deepen the link between architecture and visual arts, dissolving the design from the usual disciplinary conventions and making it conquer an autobiographical autonomy in terms of authorship.
As the artist states, he is in the relationship of three elements - thought, word, and figure - that fits his work, which is applied to the so-called "architectural design" only for random life choices.
The exhibited drawings, in fact, are the landing at architecture through the territories of art: sign and colour are the materials, the mastic that holds the projects together on the sheet of paper. A collection of images that point to the moral sense, the ethics of building by making, image after image, ghosts and projections of a social and historical impossibility more than a personal one.
The project is part of a specific interest by the Pastificio Cerere Foundation for architecture, an important cultural target that sees contemporary art in constant dialogue with other disciplines.
On the occasion of the exhibition, the collection of selected writings “Small Anthology. Dario Passi” is going to be published by DIVISARE featuring critical contributions by Achille Bonito Oliva, Giorgio Muratore, and Franco Purini.
Biography
Dario Passi lives and works in Rome where he was born. After graduating in architecture, numerous competitions mark some of the main stages of his design. His artistic career began in 1977 with the participation at the International Art Meetings organized by Achille Bonito Oliva together with artists emerging in those years. In 1980 the encounter/confrontation with Enzo Cucchi brings Dario in the first of a series of exhibitions entitled "Duetto" by Francesco Moschini. Following are some exhibitions at the A.A.M. and the exhibition at the International Art Meetings, featuring four large oil canvases that see the figures of his projects painted as a built landscape and declined in a single brown colour.
These canvases are a kind of legacy of his architectural work that in the early 1990s he abandoned definitively. In 1994, the great "Winter" exhibition at the Museo Laboratorio of the University of Rome La Sapienza, showcased some twenty large paintings composed by on white, grey and black structures. This is the beginning of a pictorial research that will develop in later years.
