Youth center
The youth center in Lichtervelde, is conceived as a public house. A house that is open to the neighbourhood, but provides a certain intimacy for his users.
A generous house, where interactions and activities can take place in a spontaneous way.
A building that fits into its context. The building is developed around two exterior chambers, indirectly linked to the urban fabric. Both chambers mediate between the youth center and the neighborhood but they also get the status of an event square. A layered concept ensures that the building appears in various manners and allows versatile use. The variety of (exterior) rooms can work together.
This flexibility arises from the architecture: an ensemble of volumes who are interconnected generates an undetermined interspace that can be claimed. This ensemble results in a dynamic of seeing and being seen. The youth center as an urban theater, where the actors can become a spectator and vice versa.
A theatre with volumes and walls as coulisses and chambers as scene.
Raw construction materials such as ceramic building bricks are left exposed.
