Giuditta Castle Resort
A massif is a section of the planet’s crust that is marked by faults and flexures. It generates a solid structural unit that was taken as a plinth for the construction of several medieval fortresses around Molise.
The position of Roccamandolfi ́s castle on the mountain top embodies the presence of an enormous boulder that weaves with the continuous movement of the territory. Our proposal organizes around the existing pathway that accesses the castle. The pathway is expanded like a terrace and extended like a ramp improving the accessibility.
The main unit of the resort takes place halfway on the path - at the terrace. A concrete slab follows the morphology of the mountain and faces the untouched pine trees. Like a promenade it leads you to the reception:
a. The direction of the slope shows you the way unveiling the space beneath the terrace. A wall embraces the mountain and a set of structural cores organize the bedrooms and a restaurant.
b. The diversity of tourism - associated with the multiple trekking routes - establishes a duality of accommodation. A building like a veranda introduces more of an informal relationship with the natural reserve and connects it to the castle.
The terrace shrinks to become a pathway leading further up. The existent broken ramp is extended intertwining the pathway and the castle.
The presence of the ruin is enhanced by the facilities given to reach it. The primary perception of expansion at the mountain top is preserved - leaving the built structure as a physical artifact which contains within itself the social and technological situation in which it was built.
Bedrooms
There ́s a dark corridor leading you throughout the building - it provides glimpses of outside grounds.
A set of monolithic cores supporting the terrace share the strength of the castle foundations. They define the rooms like individual tunnels opening towards the landscape. A cabinet defines the back of the room and extends over the core tuning the environment with the pine forest.
Restaurant
The dark corridor opens up at the restaurant. Three cores compose the space and hold a roof that follows the direction of the slope. Limestones collected on the surroundings are gathered to form a uniform mass flooring.
As you enter, the outside path and the hotel corridor colide in a foyer area where your belongings can be placed. As you go on - the landscape becomes more clear. One of the cores separates two areas:
a. On your left a window opens towards the mountain tops. An outside area is provided for breakfast and informal dishes.
b. On your right a brighter and higher space brings you closer to the lime boulders. As you go down four steps a fine dinning area takes place. The kitchen wall establishes a background to the landscape.
Veranda rooms
A building like a veranda.
It embodies the presence of a trekking path and talks about a diverse type of accommodation. A soft wooden veranda defines a collective space and lines up a set of cells where you can stay over night. These rooms are enclosed in itself like a shellfish that retracts when light is too bright.
