The Berrow Foundation Building
Stanton Williams’ work at Lincoln College includes the refurbishment of the existing Grade II Listed building from 1905-6 and a new two-storey extension and basement (replacing an existing single storey building), on a constrained site in the middle of the Oxford Conservation area.
To meet the current needs of the College, which includes a growing number of students and increased cultural activities for the public, the brief called for a design to re-energise and improve facilities, including accessibility, for the outdated existing building, and create additional multifunctional spaces, together with music practice rooms and WCs.
Located in sensitive heritage surroundings, between two historic gardens and adjacent to the Grade I Listed 17th century Chapel and early 20th century Rector’s lodgings, the new extension is intended to act as a quiet foil to its rich context. The interplay between new and old is emphasised throughout the design. The proportion of the new extension is informed by the geometry and rhythm of the existing building, threading together new and old using the same palette of materials (limestone, glass and timber).
The design of the glazing is intended to strengthen the relationship of the building with its context; flush corner glazing on the upper level offers a reflected close view of the neighbouring Chapel whilst acting as a visual space between the buildings. In contrast, deeply recessed glazing on the ground level of the new building offers a physical connection, drawing the landscape into the building.
The interior is filled with natural light; an elegant timber-lined sequence of new and old spaces has been designed to accommodate the current operation and future opportunities.
The buildings were completed in March 2015 with new names, The Berrow Foundation Building and New Garden Building.
