LOFT IN BARCELONA
A galery-house loft inside an old butcher shop in the centre of Barcelona.
Slightly lowering the floor level on 2/3 of its surface allowed creating 4 spaces in 1: one space that opens on to the square, one lower darker space, one vertical room which opens on to a rear patio, and a high low ceiling « perch ».
A birch plywood skin covers the floor, extends and crawls to create small hidden spaces, storages and bathroom, folds into stairs and shelves, unfolds into a table, a bed or sofa.
A gallery-house loft inside a long and narrow old butcher shop in the heart of Barcelona:
Open entirely both façades, fully allow light to enter, totally empty the space, lower the floor lever of 1 meter on 2/3 of the surface and hang up an intermediate floor. Theses few gestures allowed to create 4 spaces in, 4 contrasting atmospheres:
- An extroverted square level room becomes the day lounge, flooded with sunlight and the square’s life.
- A lower darker space, the place of the kitchen-bar and meals.
- A vertical room, place of contemplation of the patio, the evening lounge
- A perch, suspended close from the ceiling, place of sleep, with a dominant view over both horizontal and vertical spaces. A birch plywood skin covers the floor, separates more or less to create shelves, a bar or a sofa, rises and folds into some stairs, unfolds to transform into a table, a bed, crawls to create storages, a mini bathroom and dressing room.
During opening to the public this skin closes up, hiding all private life functions. The space is then open, clear; bare, ready to host the exposed objects.
