Long Gallery
Long Gallery is a result of an invited competition for a temporary museum with the aim of expose to the public the work of a recognized photographer. The proposed project is an infinite gallery that extends itself as long as needed. When its closed on both extremes the inside structure define an infinite path alongside with the images on the wall. The images have no hierarchy and the space follows this idea of repetition, rhythm and continuity without main spaces. Still there is an idea of promenade inside of the rigid floorplan.
Due to the black and white images of the artist, all the project is very neutral and the control of the natural light is of very importance. So, the dimension of the openings is balanced by the geographical position of the gallery regarding the sun’s movement. And the natural light is also filtered by the wooden structure of the inside. It’s an introspective space where there’s no relation with outside park, just the sky and work of the artist.
There’s a provocative idea on the gallery itself since it’s position is directly blocking the connection to the existing lake: the existing path with the perpendicular position of the gallery is generating a big cross, like a new symbolic center. But the scale is also somehow provotactive since it’s a no referenced object that proposes a certain monumentality that one can feel while using the inside space. The temporary museum is too small for such a strong natural context and too big for such a simple exhibition space.
Long Gallery has a stretched exaggerated floorplan of 25x5m and a high of 7 meters. The structure is completely visible and it defines the complete big space of the project. Still, it needs the help of the cladding made out of wooden boards in order to guarantee the structural resistance of the project in both directions.
