Casa CU is located in a semi-peripheral outskirt of a small town in southern Sardinia, in a residential neighborhood, consisting of a sequence of single-family homes, mostly isolated in lots and bordered by low fences.
The project was born as an intersection of the architectural type imposed by the local building codes - the house detached from streets and adhering to the back of the lot - with the patio house type, the latter originated from the owner’s desire of "a small garden, intimate and private. " From this initial data it was born the idea of a house composed of three parts: a solid and prismatic volume, made of masonry, large enough to accommodate the living spaces for the owners; a second body, inside which is located the guest room, superimposed on the first one; and the patio, a space obtained by subtracting a circumscribed area from the white volume, large enough to create the little garden imagined by the owners. The patio figures excavated in the white prism and the overlapped wooden volume are the elements that give rise to the composition and shape of the house. This special role is emphasized by the use of the larch laths and by the rounded shapes of the corners. In the prismatic volume find space all the living environments of the owners: a studio, a living room with kitchen, a bedroom, a bathroom and a storage room. In the body on the upper level is the guest room and bathroom, as well as a small studio directly connected to the garden roof where native ornamental herbs, such as helichrysum, satureja thymbra, lavander, have been housed.
